NRL Preview
Newcastle Knights v Sydney Roosters

Friday, April 14, 6pm (AEST), McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Good Friday can’t come quick enough for the Roosters after their 32-8 thumping at the hands of the Broncos. The Knights didn’t get the rub of the green against Bulldogs in Round 6 and will need to be on their guard against a fired up Roosters outfit. Roosters centre Latrell Mitchell might not get the opportunity at redemption, with reports that he could be dropped after getting the hook in the loss to the Broncos.
History
The Sydney Roosters have won 6 of their last 7 against the Knights posting 28-plus in 5 of the last 6. The Roosters have also won 8 of the last 10 in Newcastle. The Roosters shutout the Knights 38-0 in Round 9 last year, with Roosters centre Blake Ferguson scoring a hat-trick.
Form
After ending a long losing streak in Round 2, Newcastle have subsequently dropped four straight. They enter this off a disappointing loss to Canterbury at home, in a match they had well in hand before a late try just on halftime turned the tide of the match. The Sydney Roosters opened the season like a rocket with four straight wins but have struggled over the last fortnight with defeats at the hands of Manly and Brisbane, conceding an average of 25ppg in those two defeats.
Key Matchup
Trent Hodkinson v Mitchell Pearce. Hodkinson has made a steady start to the season and many will say he overachieved when he represented NSW at Origin level. In saying all of that, he’s experience is invaluable to his halves partner Brock Lamb, who is still learning the ropes. If the Knights are any chance of an upset, Hodkinson has to play out of his skin. Pearce has been excellent for the Roosters this season and already has six try-assists under his belt. Blues coach Laurie Daley will give him strong consideration for the No.7 jersey at the selection table if he continues in this rich vein of form.
Stats That Matter
Newcastle are 3-3 ATS with a 4-2 under number while the Roosters are 3-3 ATS with a 3-3 total record. The Sydney Roosters have won 6 of their last 7 against the Knights posting 28-plus in 5 of the last 6. The Chooks have won 8 of the last 10 in Newcastle. Since 2014 road teams off a loss of 20 or more cover at 57% while road faves off a 20-point loss are 7-4 ATS.
Final Thoughts
This could get very ugly for the Knights. Roosters coach Trent Robinson would have hammered his troops this week and will be demanding a big statement this week. The Knights just don’t have the class to match the star-studded Roosters.
