NRL Preview
Penrith Panthers v Cronulla Sharks

Sunday, April 16, 4pm (AEST), Pepper Stadium, Penrith

The Sharks reminded everyone that they’re a force in this competition, with a 11-2 victory in the grand final replay and will be looking to build on that effort when they travel to the foot of the mountains. Meanwhile, the Panthers welcome back plenty of key troops, with Matt Moylan, Waqa Blake, Tyrone Peachey, James Fisher-Harris, Bryce Cartwright and Peta Hiku all named in the extended squad. Keep an eye on team news to see if the likes of Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey take their spot in the final 17.
History
Cronulla have won 7 of the last 9 against Penrith including both games last season. The Sharks won the Round 8 clash 20-18 at Cronulla and did the job again in Round 18 at Penrith with a 26-10 victory.
Form
Despite being astonishingly backed into premiership favouritism pre-season, Penrith have opened the year 2-4. They enter this off a disappointing loss to South Sydney at home but they had excuses with eight missing. The Panthers have conceded 20-plus in their last two defeats. Cronulla have moved to third in the ladder after a gutsy 11-2 win over Melbourne in a replay of last year’s decider. The Sharks have now won three straight and have not conceded more than 18 points in their last five.
Key Matchup
Matt Moylan v Valentine Holmes. Moylan let down his team and Panthers fans by breaking team protocol after their loss to the Storm and could have made a difference for the Panthers in their loss to the Rabbitohs last week. He’s the club captain and will have a point to prove here. Meanwhile, Holmes is enjoying the open spaces at fullback and was outstanding against the Knights a fortnight ago. He’s an excitement machine and the battle of the fullbacks is worth the price of admission alone.
Stats That Matter
Penrith are 2-4 ATS with a 4-2 under number while Cronulla are 3-3 ATS with a 4-2 under record. Cronulla have won 7 of the last 9 against Penrith including both games last season. Penrith are 20-14 ATS in day matches since 2014 while Cronulla are 19-12 ATS. The Panthers are 3-7 ATS with a 7-3 under record as a small home favourite. The Sharks have covered four straight road games while they are a perfect 5-0 as a small road outsider.
Final Thoughts
This is set to be a enthralling contest between a great attacking side (4th) in the Panthers and a rock-solid defensive side (4th) in the Sharks. Defence wins out here and the Sharks with +3.5 start looks a great bet.
