Liverpool v Bournemouth

Liverpool

It was a good weekend for Liverpool, as they not only won the derby against Everton, but also strengthened their grip on a spot in the top four, as their rivals faltered.

Third placed Liverpool and second placed Spurs were the only teams in the top six to win this weekend. Liverpool now hold a six point lead over Manchester United who are fifth and are nine points clear of Arsenal in sixth, though both sides have two games in hand on the Merseysiders.

In theory Liverpool should now reinforce their position with a win at home to Bournemouth, but the very reason thatJurgen Klopp's team have fallen short of being able to challenge for the title is their frustrating tendency to drop points when you'd least expect them to. Even so, though a third or fourth placed finish might seem like an anti-climax after Liverpool's bright start, it does represent significant progress for a team that finished eighth last season.

Liverpool's chances of finishing in the top four were dealt a blow in the 3-1 victory over Everton, when Sadio Manepicked up a knee injury. He joins the likes of Jordan Henderson, Danny Ings, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge on the sidelines.

Bournemouth

Many a promising managerial career has gone off the rails, after the coach was unable to reverse a long run of poor form. Eddie Howe seems to have avoided this fate, as his Bournemouth side recently ended their plunge towards therelegation zone with a four match unbeaten run.

Two wins and two draws has seen Bournemouth shoot up to 11th, which says much for how tight the bottom half of the Premier League is. Howe will not be fooled into thinking that the hard work is over, with only seven points separating the Cherries from the relegation zone.

Though any trip to Anfield is daunting, Bournemouth can take heart from their thrilling comeback against Liverpool earlier this season, when they fought from 3-1 down to win4-3. Perhaps a more relevant reason for optimism is the recent improvement in Bournemouth's defending, having just kept successive clean sheets for the first time this season.

Andrew Surman will be missing after going off injured in Saturday's draw at Southampton. He joins Adam Federici, Lys Mousset, Junior Stanislas and Callum Wilson on the injury list, while Tyrone Mings is suspended.

Ref Watch

Lee Mason will officiate. Mason has only showed two red cards this season.
