NRL Preview
Wests Tigers v St George Illawarra Dragons

Sunday, April 2, 4pm (AEDT), ANZ Stadium, Sydney

The Tigers will be hoping Ivan Cleary signs on the dotted line this week and they can get back to focusing on football. They produced a much better effort against the Storm last week, but will need to play for 80 minutes against the resurgent Dragons. Luke Brooks has been ruled out for the Tigers with a hamstring injury, while Jamal Idris gets his first start in a Tigers jersey.
History
Both teams have shared the spoils in the past 8 meetings, with both the Tigers and Dragons winning four matches apiece. The Tigers won last year’s Round 20 clash 25-12 at ANZ Stadium.
Form
The Tigers have dropped three straight and despite a much better effort in the first half against the Storm last week, they will take little from the match they threw away. Some second-half tackling was embarrassing and the refusal of Mitchell Moses to pass the ball to James Tedesco is becoming increasingly concerning. St George Illawarra have been the surprise packets of the year with three wins and a loss to start the year. Impressive wins over Penrith, Cronulla and New Zealand were mixed with a bad loss to the Eels. The Dragons are remarkably averaging 25 points a game.
Key Matchup
James Tedesco v Josh Dugan. No one can question the effort of Tedesco at the back for the Tigers, but he hasn’t been able to replicate his Round1 heroics against the Rabbitohs. The No.1 jersey for NSW will be a hotly contested race and Tedesco will want to win a points decision over Dugan. It’s been no surprise that Dugan has been playing outstanding football since moving back to his best position of fullback. H’es been breaking tackles and the line at will and will be a piviotal figure for the Dragons if they’re to play finals football this year.
Stats That Matter
Wests Tigers are 1-3 ATS with 2-2 total record while St George Illawarra are 3-1 ATS with a 2-2 total number. The Tigers have covered 11 of their last 15 at ANZ while the Dragons have covered just 2 of their last 7 at the venue. The Dragons have covered just 2 of their last 7 off a double digit win.
Final Thoughts
The Wolf is expecting a close contest here, making the Tigers with the start the play. He is also predicting a shootout and the game total looks too low here. If the Tigers can leave the off-field drama behind them and repeat their first half efforts against the Storm, they can spring the upset over the Red V.
